Don’t underestimate China’s ability to build advanced chips, analysts say

Chinese chip makers are set to develop advanced semiconductors despite US attempts to cut off access to the technology, according to industry analysts. Some companies are looking at using less powerful or fewer semiconductors, or combining chips to reduce reliance on a single hardware. Although it is acknowledged that the task is challenging, some experiments using these techniques have shown promise. “Nothing’s impossible,” said Paul Scharre, vice president and director of studies at think tank the Center for a New American Security. Despite China’s reliance on imports for many components, the country has already acquired competency in producing legacy 28-nanometer and 14-nanometer chips.

FAQs:

What are semiconductors?
Semiconductors are materials that have electrical conductivity between that of a conductor, such as copper or aluminium, and an insulator, such as glass. They are used to create microchips, which power electronic devices.

Why is the US trying to cut off China from accessing or manufacturing semiconductor technology?
The US has been imposing restrictions as part of its efforts to limit Chinese technological advancement, citing security concerns.

What are legacy chips?
Legacy chips are those created using 28-nanometer technology or older. They are considered outdated but still have a market, with applications in automobiles, consumer electronics and other products.

What is China’s investment in its chip industry?
China is investing more than ¥1tn ($140bn) in its chip industry, which includes government subsidies and state-backed research projects.

Are China’s domestic chip makers benefiting from government support?
Yes, many domestic chip makers benefit from state-backed subsidies and research projects.

Analysts say that China’s capacity to develop cutting-edge chips should not be underestimated.

Chinese chip makers are expected to develop their own advanced semiconductors, despite efforts by the US government to restrict the use of US-made technology, according to industry analysts. Huawei and Alibaba are investigating ways to use less-powerful semiconductors to deliver cutting-edge artificial intelligence performance, the Wall Street Journal reported.  While this challenge will not be easy, Paul Scharre, Vice President and Director of Studies at the Center for a New American Security, said: “Nothing’s impossible. I certainly think in the long run, we should expect the Chinese to be able to make these technological advancements.” In a retaliatory move against US chip export restrictions, China barred key infrastructure operators from buying products from Micron Technology.
